In 1973 “art rock” was young, the ideas were fresh, the clichés were as yet unborn. Peter Gabriel’s classicism, unique voice and creative vision, Steve Hackett’s nylon string guitar, Phil Collin’s innovative time signatures and drum fills all showed us what was possible beyond the world of power chords and songs about girls. "Selling England By The Pound" was a strangely stirring triptych through medieval imagery and myth, gender, politics and romance. We are all the better for it.
